Playing

Can I play it in my browser?

Yes. The PSoXide player runs the public demo disc on its itch.io page. It requires no installation or BIOS file.

Open the browser player
Where do I download the games?

On itch.io. The PSoXide Demo Disc puts most of them on one image, and several also have their own download.

All projects
What do I need to run it on a real PS1?

A standard, unmodified retail PlayStation cannot directly boot a burned PSoXide disc. You need a modchipped console or another compatible homebrew boot method. PSoXide does not endorse modchipping or provide installation help. Modifying a console can permanently damage or brick it; any modification is at your own risk.

Hardware requirements and warning
Can I play Half-Life or Quake on it?

Half-Life’s source is public. It requires your own game data and offers no disc-image download. Hollow Knight has no public build. The Quake port is available with the shareware episode's data.

Where are the videos?

Watch Bonnie Studios on YouTube for Half-Life, Hollow Knight, Quake, NitroXide and VoXide running on original hardware, plus the browser emulator introduction.

The emulator

Do I need a BIOS?

No. PSoXide uses its own kernel to boot discs, written from public documentation and black-box observation. It can't load a BIOS at all.

How it works
Which commercial games work?

20 of the 20 games on the compatibility list reach the in-game tier in headless runs, with no BIOS. None has been played through and rated "playable" by a person yet.

How fast is it compared to DuckStation?

The speed and memory comparison against DuckStation, Beetle PSX and PCSX-Redux is being measured again on a current build. The results will be published on the comparison page with how they were measured, whichever emulator comes out ahead.

Full comparison
How accurate is it?

There's no cross-emulator accuracy comparison yet. PSoXide is tested against a real console using a hardware test battery, with documented differences and reproduction steps.

What does the emulator run on?

It builds from source as a desktop app (the README lists the extra packages Ubuntu needs), and it has a browser build, which is the player on itch.io.

How do I build the emulator?
git clone https://github.com/EBonura/PSoXide-emulator.git
cd PSoXide-emulator
make bootstrap
make build
./target/release/frontend

You need Rust through rustup, Python 3 and your host's C/C++ build tools.

Making PS1 software

How do I build my first PS1 program?

Clone the SDK and run make hello-tri-disc. You get a bootable BIN/CUE with one shaded triangle. The walkthrough covers the tools you need and how to run it.

The walkthrough
Do I have to write bare-metal code?

No. You can write bare-metal Rust against the SDK, or build scenes in the editor and let the engine and cooker turn them into a disc. Cortex Ignition is made that way.

The editor
Which repository do I need?

The SDK is EBonura/PSoXide, the emulator EBonura/PSoXide-emulator, and the editor, engine and Cortex Ignition EBonura/PSoXide-editor. The editor and emulator pin their source dependencies, and make bootstrap fetches them. The SDK builds independently.

Licence and legal

Is it open source?

The SDK, emulator, editor and engine are GPL-2.0-or-later, as are most of the games; the Quake port is GPL-2.0-only. Half-Life is source-only for non-commercial use.

Licences in detail
Can I release my own game made with it?

Using the tools does not automatically license their output under the GPL. Distributing a program incorporating or linking PSoXide’s GPL runtime or SDK generally requires GPL-compatible licensing of the combined program and complete corresponding source, including required build material. Independent art, music and other content keep their own terms; bundled demo assets may not be reusable in your release.

How do I report a bug or contribute?

Open an issue on the repository it's about: the SDK or this website, the emulator, or the editor and engine. For a change to the emulator, run make check, make test and make fmt-check, add a focused regression test, and say whether your evidence comes from emulation or real hardware. Never commit BIOS files or game images.
